Extreme Suds Test

Extreme Suds Test Tube. Duration : 9.92 Mins.

EN - I generally like to consider myself a respectful individual for the environment so I feel that I should give an apology to any environmentalist out there for having broken the rule on this occasion! Basically, I doubled up on the amount of detergent (nearly tripled) this once as I wanted to push my washer to the limit to see how it would tackle an extreme laundry situation. This load was washed and rinsed to perfection on this occasion, but I usually get good wash results even with a small amount of detergent without any unneeded waste (including water), so... an appeal to all Ariel Excel gel users: remember not to fill the dosing cap completely but only the inner ring LOL Observations - the machine becomes aware of the presence of excessive suds through the PCB which calculates the time employed by the pressure switch to signal the predetermined water level: when this is below a predifined time range, the washer starts a new enhanced rinse cycle to get rid of the assumed foam.

The Global Branding

A brand is a collection of perceptions that may be positive or negative about a name or symbol of a product/service. It goes beyond short-lived product features to include emotional benefits and associations. At their heart, brands create trust with stakeholders. A misconception is that global branding seeks to pursue an identical name, product, and marketing message worldwide. This practice is uncommon and often counterproductive. Most brands are not global in this sense. Procter & Gamble has over 89 brands, but only a handful are promoted identically worldwide.

Its well-known laundry detergent is sold in some countries as Tide and in others as Ariel. A global branding strategy is a cross-national process to improve and harmonize a brand. The goal of a global brand strategy is to develop strong brands in all countries through a continuous improvement process using organization structure, processes, and culture to allocate brand-building resources, to create synergies, and to coordinate and leverage multiple country brand strategies. Brands are becoming more valuable. In a globalizing world, brands can protect firms from international competition.

Ariel Laundry Detergent

The marketplace is confusing and cluttered with the entry of more players and the introduction of products with short lives. There is a shift, especially in industrialized countries, from manufacturing products to providing services, which are harder to evaluate and compare. Buyers lead busier lives and have less time to discern among products and sellers. So there is a need for the decision shortcuts and simplification provided by trusted brands. The lowering of trade barriers and freer information flows make it easier for brands to cross borders and be exploited internationally. The economic center of gravity is shifting from low-growth industrialized countries to rapidly growing emerging countries.

While consolidation is often emphasized in industrialized countries, enthusiasm is the theme in growing parts of the world. In industrialized countries, brandsmay exploit loyalty among aging consumers, while in emerging countries they may reach out to their large population of younger consumers that is climbing the economic ladder. From emerging markets, indigenous brands (such as Tata, Lenovo, Infosys, and China Mobile) are gaining strength in international competition. Brands (such as IBM, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley) are important also in the business-to-business space because of their reputation for expertise, reliability, and security.

Other recent trends include the proliferation of media among which consumers can now choose. Environmental issues are also growing in importance. Positioning a product close to environmental issues strengthens a brand. And some trends, such as being online, have become necessary to bolster brands. Brands can appreciate, like McDonalds, or depreciate in value, like Starbucks. The rise and fall of brands is in part tied to the popularity of their product category. Private equity groups are on the lookout to buy tarnished brands to restore their health. Managers should review their corporate practices that may tarnish their brands, such as Wal-Mart's labor relations, Microsoft's market dominance, and Nike's international contract manufacturing. Most brands fail.

Over 30,000 consumer products are launched each year, but less than a tenth have any staying power. Myopic companies reduce the quality of their products or stretch their brands unwisely, only to spend years attempting to repair the damage. Starbucks' strong brand was commoditized by overexpanding to over 13,000 coffee shops too quickly, which diminished its cachet. Brands that survive may be vulnerable to competing brands from retailers who also sell their private labels, from generic manufacturers, and from imitators where intellectual property protection is weak. They are also affected by the rise and fall of product categories, such as the Internet or unhealthy carbonated beverages.

A global branding strategy has to overcome various execution difficulties. It needs to understand the varying needs of many markets and be very creative to satisfy them. It must overcome coordination problems, varying coverage of agencies, and available media. It also needs to craft a process and design an organization to develop, strengthen, and leverage a brand.

Globalizing a Brand Requires Different Thinking

Grab Opportunity

Many well established national and regional brands see global expansion as the golden egg. The promise of new emerging consumer markets in many of the world's burgeoning economic regions is a great lure for these brands. China and India, for example, have emerging middle class consumer markets that look to provide many consumer brands (US and European) with the opportunity to grow market share.

Ariel Laundry Detergent

To navigate these fertile markets and increase your market share it is important that you understand brand dynamics. Sadly, many manufactures do not. They will plow these new waters with the same reckless brand management that has led them to believe that their domestic success is a result of something other than heavy advertising spending. Understanding how a brand's permission sets the stage for future success in the market is essential, and the lessons are even more telling when you move the brand into a different culture.

Global Brand Strategy

The root of your brand essence and strategy is found in the belief system of the target audience you are trying to influence. It is not an amalgam of product benefits, category descriptors, or "branded colors." When customers choose a particular brand, within a category of offerings, they choose to purchase a brand that seems connected to their own sense of self. The more closely the DNA of the brand resembles the genetic makeup of the target, the more apt they are to prefer it, the greater that attraction, and the greater are your margins.
When you think about a foreign culture (foreign to your own current success) you can quickly see why understanding the preceptive underpinnings of that culture are the keys to your success.

Case In Point

Here is a prime example. When P&G launched its low suds Ariel soap detergent (its high-end European brand) in Egypt many years ago, they believed that their brand was tied up in efficacy (in other words, they had no brand at all). Worse still, they simply cloned the advertising from successful European (read British) commercials from the period. Lacking any REAL brand DNA, P&G sold its low-suds detergent with the same dramatic dynamic that worked so well in the UK. Here is the plot:

The Commercial

YOUNG WIFE: Wife has switched to Ariel.

NOSEY MOTHER-IN-LAW: Mother-in-law barges in and chastises the young wife for the choice saying, "I always use (insert generic brand here)."

YOUNG WIFE: Wife washes two loads, one using Ariel, and the other using "NOSEY MOTHER-IN-LAW 's detergent" and they compare the results.

The winner -- Ariel out-cleans "NOSEY MOTHER-IN-LAW 's brand".

NOSEY MOTHER-IN-LAW: Mother-in-law retreats with her tail between her legs.

YOUNG WIFE: Wife is the hero.

It was too bad no one bothered to find out that in Egypt, mother-in-law is an honored person. She is seen as an authority and help -- not the meddlesome stereotype that we find in Europe. The result... the launch was a major flop.

No REAL Brands

In the absence of REAL brand, the brand management team was forced to look for solutions based on efficacy and they failed miserably. The cleaning process in Egypt was amazingly complicated and time consuming. The wife, who's been responsible for the washing, would spend hours each day cleaning the family wash. She would mix detergents, shred bars of soap, and mix a cacophony of ingredients that would baffle a scientist. She would boil the clothes, hand ring them, wash them in a machine, and put them through a host of other processes that took half a day. Finally, she would proudly hang the wash out on the back clothesline for the admiration of the neighbors. Her result-- amazingly clean clothes and a full day of labor.

A Cultural Bias Will Lead You Awry

From the cultural bias of the European brand managers, it seemed like a great idea to "BRAND" Ariel as the laundry detergent that "saves you time" (for the same result). The idea was that busy WIFE would gladly forgo the complicated and time-consuming ordeal that she currently employed for faster results. Sounds like a no-brainer.

The problem is that no one looked at the preceptive underpinnings in the culture. They assumed that the values found in European and American culture were universal and that the Egyptian housewife coveted these same values. They were wrong.

Once again, the brand launch floundered. It turned out that difficulty of process and complicated chemistry was one of the ways in which the Egyptian housewife measured her value to her family.

Don't Make The Mistake

Without such an ordeal, she felt less valuable. Even though the outcome was the same, amazingly clean clothes, the cumbersome and time consuming process was preferred because it reinforced a value that said 'the harder I work, the more valuable I am."

This is a great case in point, one whose lessons on brand development are far reaching. It certainly demonstrates how important it is to delve deeply into the DNA of your target audience when expanding into new cultures. It also demonstrates that brand management, for the most part, is not BRAND management, It's product management. Had the discipline of looking at a brand as a reflection of a customer's beliefs and values instead of product attributes been part of the P&G culture, they never would have made these mistakes.

Why Front Load Washers Need HE Detergent

Since the introduction of the front-loading washing machine into the North American market their sales have literally exploded. Like most people, you probably bought one because of the suggested savings.

The claims about their efficiency are true. When operated properly you can save energy, water, and money. Plus they do a fabulous job of washing your clothes.

Ariel Laundry Detergent

But, using the wrong detergent can quickly destroy any hopes of savings. Along with the front loaders amazing popularity has come a tremendous amount of misunderstanding about the detergent they require.

A front-loading washing machine needs a special detergent. It's called HE (High Efficiency) detergent. Without HE detergent your washer will not clean properly. Using regular detergent may even cause your front loader mechanical problems.

HE detergent is a type of non-sudsing detergent. In fact, while operating, the machine almost appears not to have any detergent inside.

Unfortunately, we have become so used to seeing suds in our old washing machines that we mistakenly relate the presence of suds to proper operation. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

An old fashioned top loader washes your clothes by constantly tumbling them through a full tub of water. Your front loader works differently.

In a front loader your clothes are picked up by the vanes inside the drum, lifted to the top of the drum, and then dropped into water laying at the bottom of the drum. This collision of clothes and water will dislodge the dirt from the clothing fibers. Later the drum stops turning, the water flows out the bottom of the drum via the pump, taking both water and dirt out to the household drain. Finally the drum is spun at very high speed to remove the final amounts of water, dirt and detergent from the clothes. This front-loading method of cleaning your clothes is both simple and dependable.

But, this simple method stops working if there are too many suds being produced by your laundry detergent.

If you use regular detergent in your front loader excess suds will be produced by the interaction of the detergent and tumbling water. These unwanted suds will accumulate at the bottom of the wash drum where they will lie on top of the water. Within minutes these suds will take the form of a big fluffy cushion. This cushion hinders clothes from reaching the water. As your clothes fall from the top of the drum to the bottom they hit the suds cushion rather than the water. The result is a very poor wash.

Even owners of front loaders who are using the correct detergent can misunderstand how to use it properly. Not seeing any suds they think they require more detergent. They keep increasing the amount used per load until suds finally appear. This can be a costly mistake that again results in a poor wash.

Using too much detergent is as bad as using the wrong detergent. Extreme amount of detergent can produce symptoms such as leaking, vibration, noisy operation, and poor spinning.

If you have been using the wrong detergent (or the proper type incorrectly) in your front load washer try the following suggestions. Run the machine through a number of cycles using hot water. This should help expel the old detergent. It usually takes 3 or 4 cycles to wash away the old detergent accumulated inside the machine. Or add a product that will remove the build-up of old detergent. One such product is called GLISTEN. It is available through most appliance parts wholesalers. Some grocery store chains now include it in their laundry detergent section.

As a matter of fact it is a good idea to use a cleaner such as GLISTEN in your front loader every few months. It is an inexpensive form of regular maintenance. A small amount should also be added to the detergent dispenser drawer to remove any residue from this area.

So if you think your front loader is not working as well as anticipated, look to your laundry detergent. If it does not say HE on the label -- switch immediately.

Then purchase a box of the proper HE type detergent and you may be pleasantly surprised.

How to Get Whiter Laundry

If you're fed up with your whites looking a bit off-colour, stop worrying. You don't need to invest in new clothes or reach for the bottle of environment-unfriendly bleach. This is all you need do to make your whites look as dazzling as humanely possible.

Use a good quality biological washing powder

Ariel Laundry Detergent

For starters, try washing your items in a good quality biological detergent powder at the maximum temperature possible - that's the one listed on the care label. Ariel and Persil washing powders come out really well in UK consumer tests and are the ones I'd recommend. Cheap powders are just not as good. And liquid detergents - even biological ones - do not contain as many bleaching agents as powders so they won't work as well either.

Try oxy-cleaning agents, Napisan or Ecover bleach

If your garment has grubby marks, try treating them with an oxy-action pre-wash spray before the wash. If they're just a bit all-over grubby, try adding the recommended dose of an in-wash oxy-action stain remover for white   market a good range of oxy-action products in the UK - they're the ones in the bright pink containers. But I find supermarket own-brand versions to be just as good - and much cheaper. Look out for products marked 'contains active oxygen'.

For generally 'off colour' whites, I've also had great results with a product called Napisan - though it's not recommended for items containing elastic or lycra. You can find it with the baby products in the supermarkets (its main use is for soaking terry nappies) or you can buy it from chemists. And the good news is that it's pretty cheap. For best results, soak the items for 6-8 hours or overnight, then wash as normal.

If your items contain elastic or lycra, try Ecover bleach.

Don't use ordinary bleach unless all else has failed

Avoid using standard household bleach on your clothes unless all other action has failed and you're about to chuck the item out. Even then, start off using a dilute solution and only make it stronger if you need to. Also, there's really no need to buy those expensive little sachets of whitening stuff. Although they work, in my experience they don't work any better than the methods I've explained here and the harsh chemicals won't do your clothes any favours.

And if the sun shines

If by chance it's sunny outside and looks like staying that way for more than a few minutes, don't forget the bleaching powers of the sun. But remember, although it works well for natural fibres like cotton and linen, it tends to turn anything polyester or acrylic slightly yellow. So whip those ones off your washing line as quickly as possible.

Routine maintenance

To keep your whites beautifully white, only ever wash them with other white articles. Washing them with anything coloured, even if it's colourfast, will eventually make them dull. Many people also swear by adding a good dose of washing soda to their normal washing powder. It's cheap, environment friendly and can also help reduce the amount of normal detergent powder you need. So it's got to be worth a try.

Guide to Managing Your Laundry at Home

Twenty-four programmes on the washing machine, six mysterious symbols on your T-shirt, washing powders, liquids, balls - when did laundry get so complicated? Here's how to make it simple again:

7 tips for getting the perfect wash

Ariel Laundry Detergent

1. Get clothes wash-ready. Do up bra straps to stop the catches snagging other clothes; zip up zips; empty pockets and use net bags for delicates.

2. Read the labels. The tags on most items of clothing tell you how to wash and dry for best results (see our guide overleaf). Read and obey!

3. Use your machine properly It's tempting to wash everything at 40ºC, but for best results, use the correct wash programme for different clothes items.

4. Pre-treat stains. If clothes are stained, make sure you apply a stain remover before you wash, otherwise the stains may set.

5. Use the right amount of detergent. Too little won't get everything clean, but too much will leave a residue on your clothing. The correct amount varies depending on how hard your water is, how dirty the washing, whether you're using powder or liquid and the size of your washing machine. If in doubt, follow the guidelines on the packaging.

6. Don't cut corners. Machine-washing items that should be hand-washed or dry-cleaned just to save time will only end in tears and ruined clothes.

7. Clean your machine. Every few months add a cup of white wine vinegar to the detergent dispenser and put the empty machine on a 95ºC wash to clean it.

Top tips

Don't use fabric softener on every item you wash. Softeners and conditioners coat clothing fibres, so shouldn't be used on towels as they make them less absorbent. When they're used on clothing, however, conditioners make ironing easier.

Pick the right detergent

Biological ('bio') detergent contains cleaning enzymes to improve wash performance at lower temperatures, plus bleach and brightening agents. This is the harshest detergent - use it for whites and lights, but not if you have sensitive skin or on dark colours as it will cause them to fade.

Non-biological ('non-bio') detergent has had most of the enzymes removed, and is ideal for sensitive and young skins. But, with the enzymes gone, results are not as good as with a bio detergent.

Colour care detergent contains enzymes to shift dirt but the bleach activator has been removed, so it gives a good wash, but not quite as good as a bio. Use it on items where you don't want the colour to fade.

Silk and wool detergent has no enzymes, bleach or brightening agents to give a less effective but very gentle wash that's better for delicates.

Ecological detergents (available as bio and non-bio) use non-synthetic, plant-based ingredients. One manufacturer, Ecover, says clothes need freshening up rather than a good clean. When cleaning is important, it advises using its oxygen bleach. Ecological detergents cost more, but all the ingredients are bio-degradable.

Powder vs liquid? Traditional vs tablets?

Powder

This is poured into the machine's detergent dispenser. Tends to be a bit better on muddy marks. You may get a residue left in the dispenser or on clothes.

Tablets

These are put in a net that goes inside the machine. No need for messy measuring, plus Persil have a new tablet that includes a stain remover to tackle grubby clothes. Can leave a visible residue inside the drum.

Liquid

This is poured into a dosing ball and put inside the machine. It washes all away, leaving no residue. If the ball gets tangled up in clothes, the liquid may not be distributed evenly.

Liquid gel sachets

These are used inside the machine. Leave no residue. Unlike tablets, you don't need a net. More costly: Persil Non-Bio Capsules cost £5.29 for 20 washes but Persil Liquigel Bottle is just £3.25 for 20 washes.

What do laundry labels mean?

Care symbols can be confusing, so here's our cut-out-and-keep guide to help you understand them Dry your washing correctly

Dry outside where possible to give the freshest results, but bring the washing in and fold it neatly before it overdries for easier ironing.

Hang the washing line out of direct sunlight - that way, you'll stop your clothes from fading.

Peg out properly when hanging out clothes. Shirts should be pegged by the tail, T-shirts by the hem, dresses by the shoulders, trousers and straight skirts by the waistband (fuller skirts by the hem), and socks by the toe.

Invest in a dryer - use a tumble or washer-dryer instead of an airer if possible (turn to page 154 for our selection of the best washer-dryers). An airer takes up a lot of space, looks unsightly and, unless your washing dries quickly, can smell like an old umbrella.

Check the temperature when you tumble dry (see the clothes labels for the correct setting). As a rule, high temperatures are for cotton, denim and linen; cooler temperatures are for synthetics, lingerie and cotton knits.

Never overfill your dryer - you need enough space for the hot air to circulate and for clothes to tumble.

Clean the lint filter after every use or fluff will build up, making it less efficient. Too much lint in your dryer can also be a fire hazard.

Don't over-dry if you intend to iron your washing straight away. There should be the slightest hint of dampness to make it easier to iron. Over-drying also stiffens fabric. Try to hang or fold items as soon as possible after washing to reduce creases.

Your essential kit

1. Housekeeper's Collection Storage Box, £20, John Lewis - ideal for keeping your washing equipment all in one place.

2. Comfort Pure Fabric Softener, £1.26 for 750ml - use to condition clothes for easier ironing.

3. Oxi Clean Powder, £3.99 for 500g - put a scoop in with your laundry to tackle stubborn stains.

4. Ariel Non-Bio Liquitabs, about £2.75 for 10 - quick and easy to use, these contain all you need to wash an average load and won't leave behind any residue.

5.Lavender Linen Spray, £12 for 115ml, The White Company - will give clothes a fresh scent and make light work of ironing.

6. Dryer Balls, £9.95 for two, Lakeland - these help soften clothes as the spikes massage the textile fibres while in your dryer.

7. Soft Grip Clothes Pegs, £5 for 24, Lakeland - great for hanging out even delicate items.
