Clothing Care and Laundry Tips

A wardrobe can be really expensive. Protect your investment by taking care of your clothes using these tips. You can avoid fading, shrinking, napping and even dry cleaning if you properly take care of your clothing.

Vinegar can be your best friend in the laundry room. White vinegar works great on brightening colors, preventing yellowing of fine lace or silk, and removing many stains. Vinegar can even help remove gum, mildew and grass stains. Keeping a spray bottle filled halfway with white vinegar and the other half water can be helpful for pre-treating stains. Add a half cup of vinegar just before the rinse cycle to help remove detergent residues from your clothing. It acts like a natural fabric softener, making clothes fluffy and static free.

Nothing is worse than opening to dryer only to discover that your beautiful new red shirt has stained everything pink. To avoid the dreaded color run, wash red items with dark clothing. Wash them in cold water and use a laundry detergent that says something like, "safe for colors", "color care", or "inhibits dye transfer" on the label. Some detergents are even made for dark fabrics and help the dye set in. Use the delicate cycle the first time so that red or dark items are not squeezed tightly against other fabrics.

If a tag says to dry clean only, then you probably should follow that advice. But, if the fabric is safe to steam, you may be able to avoid dry cleaning until the end of the season when you are ready to store the garment. Put some vodka in a spritz bottle and spray areas that might start to smell. Your body can leave bacteria on your clothing and vodka safely kills the germs that cause the odor. You can let the garment air dry or use a clothes steamer to further freshen up the clothing. Steaming causes less damage than ironing and can be used on many fine fabrics.

Use a lint brush to get lint and pet hair off of suits, jackets and shirts. Use an adhesive lint roller if the fabric is more delicate. A lint brush can sometimes make a fabric appear fuzzy, which is great for certain things, like flannel, but you may want to use a lint roller for more delicate items.

Synthetic materials can actually melt at high temperatures. You should put your dryer on a "normal" setting or even low to avoid shrinkage and permanent wrinkling. Garment racks in the laundry room are great for hanging synthetics to dry. If you accidentally shrink a sweater made of wool and/or cotton based yarn, you can get it back to its normal size by soaking it in warm water mixed with shampoo. The shampoo loosens and softens yarns, allowing you to gently pull the sweater back to its original shape and size.

Cleaning Tips For College Freshmen Purchasing College Supplies

Brooms, ironing boards and green cleaning products are some of the useful products for those heading to school for the first time.

You're getting ready to head off to college for the first time and wondering which cleaning supplies need to contained in your college supplies to be ready for anything that happens. Along with the basics like brooms, towels, and green cleaning products, don't forget cleaning items that will make you look good, like laundry detergent and an ironing board.

Face it, there is enough to worry about when getting ready for college without having to spend time debating whether or not to include green cleaning products among the college supplies.

Let's make it easy. Here are five cleaning tips that every college freshman should know.

Go Green: Let's answer the previous question about green cleaning supplies first. The short answer is: yes, use green cleaning supplies. Few places on this planet are more environmentally conscious than college campuses, so green cleaning products will help new students fit in. Plus, they provide the added benefit of helping save the environment. Until recently the biggest problem with green cleaning products was that they were more expensive, but now that they are more common and can be easily found on internet sites like ReStockIt.com, the cost difference usually amounts to pennies.
Be prepared to look good: Many college students arrive on campus with laundry detergent and maybe some bleach, but forget about wrinkles. Perhaps there will be someone living on the floor with an iron and ironing board, but why risk it? Since most dorm rooms don't have much storage space, it may be helpful to choose a table-top ironing board, which is usually fine for most shirts and pants and can be stored under a bed.
Go for the sweep: College dorms generally have cleaning crews that take care of the common areas, but freshman still need to find a way to keep their rooms tidy. A broom is a must. It can be used to remove dirt from tile or short industrial carpeted surfaces. A broom is also useful for removing spider webs from high ceilings.
Don't trust dust: You'd be surprised how much dust can build up in only one semester. A duster, or a cloth and some dusting spray, should be part of any list of college supplies. It may seem unnecessary now, but when someone you want to impress comes to the room later in the semester, you don't want them leaving early because the room is too dusty.
When in doubt, sanitize: College freshmen are exposed to a lot of new people, and so are their rooms. Help prevent the spread of illness - and be ready for the inevitable spills and drips - with plenty of sanitizing products. Load up on Purell hand sanitizers and spray sanitizers in the fall and return home for Christmas break healthy.

Following these five tips will help any college student prepare for their first time away from home. These college supplies will also help keep any student healthier, making the college experience more enjoyable.

A Lay Man's Guide To Cleaning Vinyl Siding

This article talks in detail about how to clean vinyl sidings. It tells you about all the precautions that are needed to be taken. It also tells you all the processes involved in cleaning vinyl sidings.
A top quality vinyl siding is one of the easiest products to maintain. Manufacturers recommend a simple rinsing with a garden hose, twice a year to maintain a brand new appearance. Premium vinyl siding is a non-porous material, unlike wood, cement fiber or aluminum siding. This lack of pores means that all soil is surface soil. Wood, cement fiber and painted aluminum siding, all have pores in which to trap dirt and mildew. If your vinyl siding is neglected for several years the manufacturers generally recommend an application of a chlorine bleach and water solution, using 3 parts water to1 part bleach. An inexpensive pump up garden sprayer is ideal for this job. Allow the solution to work for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly. Remember to protect the foliage of your vinyl siding. An alternative to bleach is a solution of TSP, available at any hardware, paint, or home improvement store. Follow the directions on the label for best results.

How to Clean Vinyl Siding?

Cleaning vinyl siding is a snap with the right tools. If your siding isn't in need of scrubbing, spraying it with a hose can wash away the dirt and grime that has accumulated throughout the year. If you need a cleaning solvent, some ordinary dish soap or laundry detergent mixed with water will do the trick. Where there are troubled areas, such as mildew, a mild solution of 1 quart of bleach, ¾ gallons of water and a small amount of detergent. Scrub the areas with a soft-bristled, long-handled brush.

If scrubbing with a brush is going to be too much work, you can wash your siding with a power washer, which can be rented at your local home improvement store or other equipment rental business. Most homes can be pressure washed with a 2200 psi or higher washer.

Transform Your Siding from Drab to Fab

"Pressure washers are easy to operate and provide significantly more pressure than your garden hose to give your home a complete cleaning." Most pressure washers come with an injector to mix cleaning solutions into the jet stream.

To wash, follow these simple steps:

-Turn off all power to the outside lights that may get wet while washing your vinyl siding.

-Ensure that all your windows are closed and spray away from doors and windows while cleaning your vinyl siding.

-If you have shrubbery or flowers below, make sure you cover them with plastic so no cleaning solution drips on them, when you are cleaning your vinyl siding.

-Start at the top and work your way down while cleaning your vinyl siding.

-Be sure to rinse your cleaning solution off the siding before it dries once you are done with cleaning your vinyl siding.

Using Restora® Heavy Duty Cleaner available at http://www.flood.com is an immediate answer. This cleaning agent removes deep stains such as mildew, oxidation, chalk, and even algae stains from the vinyl siding. You can use it in junction with the Restora® Lo-Lustre Vinyl Revitalizer. This product restores vinyl siding surfaces to a "brand new" surface and shine.

Soap Nuts - The Most Affordable And Green Laundry Detergent

We are all stretching our paychecks (if we are still getting one) as far as possible these days. We are also very concerned about all possible health hazards, and living greener lives. Unfortunately, usually what goes along with the supposedly "greener", better products are higher prices. A walk down any aisle in any store, and this is immediately apparent. I recently read numerous articles on the green profiteering that is occurring in virtually all industries.

I also read erroneous articles that referred to soap nuts as an expensive green laundry detergent alternative. Nothing could be SO far from the truth. I received more than one apology (of sorts) from writers that simply did not do their research very well. Any conclusions from a study that begins with faulty premises and improper testing techniques will result in incorrect data. A big problem with soap nuts is that there are large data gaps and some poor quality information floating around. One writer claimed that the cost of using soap nuts was around 50 cents per load. That was utter nonsense. I promptly set her straight. Properly used, soap nuts can be one of the MOST affordable ways possible to do laundry! It is VERY easy to calculate. You just need the correct data to calculate with.

NOTE: It is important to realize that it is cost prohibitive to buy soap nuts samplers or just a few ounces. The purpose of "samplers" is only to TRY them. Period. If you like how they work, then you will certainly buy them in much larger quantities to reduce your cost per ounce and associated cost per load. Right?

Let's just compare the cost of using soap nuts to using many commercial detergents that we see all the time. Let's crunch the numbers: (You'll certainly notice that I avoid metrics and am referring to USD. I believe differing methods of weights and measures, plus different currencies have added to some confusion. I'm a US citizen, and am writing in large part for a US audience to easily understand. I sincerely apologize to anyone not accustomed to my use of the weights and currency common to the US.)

You can purchase around two pounds (32-ounces) of good soap nuts for around $30. That would be a very common amount a knowledgeable soap nut user would buy. Used in the traditional manner, you will use approx. one-half ounce in a wash bag and that will yield an average of about 5 loads. That yields approx. 320 loads for the $30 dollars spent. Personally, I can usually get many more loads than that, but that is because of some tricks I use to extend their life and maximize the saponin extraction. BUT, to be conservative, let's just go with only FOUR loads per half-ounce.

A note worth mentioning: I've seen sellers claim numbers of loads that seem to be all over the place. I've also heard of people claiming to use half the amount I suggest using. I can't explain that. Let's simply bare in mind the many, many variables in how people do their laundry, plus the variables in the quality and types of soap nuts - and leave it at that. My approach is very "middle-of-the-road". I'm dealing with norms not extremes so that this is meaningful for the vast majority of scenarios.

You can take THIS to the bank: When using good quality soap nuts (the mukorossi variety is very good), one-half ounce (usually five or six whole soap nuts or the equivalent in pieces) used traditionally (in a wash bag that is put directly in with your laundry) will be reusable for four to six loads - easily.

So, at only FOUR loads per half-ounce that would give us only 256 loads (not 320) out of 32-ounces. $30 divided by 256 equals $0.127 per load. And we are talking average size, standard loads - not high efficiency loads that will extend the number of uses and thus lower the cost per load further.

Now let's run some "cost per load" comparisons with soap nuts with well known "natural" and other types of detergents in the typical sizes in which they are available. Note that all pricing has come from reputable sellers and are typical prices easily found. Again, all soap nut prices per load are based upon standard loads, not HE loads. I am making every effort to be very conservative and realistic in all my calculations and estimates.

The following are common soap nut prices at various common sizes (I pulled them right off the internet from a reputable supplier): Note: I'm even including common prices for smaller size bags (at higher costs per ounce - and STILL using only FOUR loads per half-ounce wash bag.) - A 64-ounce bag of soap nuts: $57.95 for 512 loads ($0.113 per load) - A 32-ounce bag of soap nuts: $29.95 for 256 loads ($0.117 per load) - A 16-ounce bag of soap nuts: $19.95 for 128 loads ($0.155 per load) - An 8-ounce bag of soap nuts: $12.75 for 64 loads ($0.199 per load)

The following are various commercial detergents in typical sizes and pricing. The numbers of loads are as per the manufacturers' instructions.

- Seventh Generation's Free and Clear Natural Laundry Detergent 2x Ultra: $11.99 for 50 loads. ($0.239 per load)

- All's Small and Mighty 3x Concentrate for HE washers: $8.49 for 32 loads. ($0.265 per load)

- ECOS Laundry Detergent, Ultra Concentrated with Soy Fabric Softener: $9.49 for 26 loads ($0.367 per load)

- Tide's 2x Concentrated Laundry Detergent: $14.99 for 32 loads ($0.468 per load!) This surprised me!

- Dreft's 2x Concentrated Baby Laundry Detergent: $31.99 for 110 loads ($0.290 per load)

- Babyganics 3x Concentrated Laundry Detergent: $13.49 for 33 loads ($0.408 per load)

- Method's 3x Concentrated Baby Laundry Detergent: $10.99 for 32 loads ($0.343 per load)

- Mrs. Meyer's Lavender Laundry Detergent: $13.49 for 32 loads ($0.421 per load)

Very quickly it becomes apparent that soap nuts are VERY inexpensive compared to most detergents. (Notice that I chose a nice random cross sampling of very common to some more esoteric brands, too.) Used properly soap nuts can significantly reduce our laundry costs. PLUS this does not even factor in that you have virtually no need for fabric softeners or dryer sheets when using soap nuts.

It is also noteworthy to mention that all these products being compared to soap nuts are around (give or take some) that same 32-ounce weight range I mentioned earlier that is popular with soap nut users. Most stores (aside from warehouse type stores) don't seem to carry much in larger sizes than that. I can only assume that the convenient size, weight and price points for detergents in this weight range have been determined to be the most common sellers by most retailers. It is the difference in the number of loads per ounce between soap nuts and commercial detergents that is absolutely astounding.

Regardless, the gist of this article boils down to the COST PER LOAD of using soap nuts compared to commercial detergents. Soap nuts are NOT expensive. They are a much more affordable means to do our laundry - and it certainly does not get any greener. As shown above even a very small bag of soap nuts (8 ounces for $12.75) is much less per load than any of these commercial brands - and again that is being VERY conservative in every aspect. They are less than half the cost per load compared to one of Tide's flagship detergents.

I gave a single mother, good friend of mine with three children a bag of soap nuts for the holidays. She has been working hard to make ends meet. Since that time she has raved about how wonderfully they worked, how her laundry never smelled so clean and soft, how her washing machine no longer smelled like mold and mildew. She had difficulty describing the scent, because there is no scent. How does one simply describe the scent of pure and clean? Think about it.

She didn't stop with laundry. She hasn't stopped experimenting, and I last heard that the liquid she made cleaned her coffee maker better than even CLR did. (Yuk. I'm sure she would have cleaned out the CLR very well. She's a smart lady.) Amazing. She tells me her coffee maker works and looks like new again.

Soap nuts are not only growing in consumer awareness when GREEN is "in". It is growing in awareness at a time when we all can use conserving a little more of the green in our pockets. The green movement is only going to continue to grow. Both business and government has recognized the need for change (for different reasons of course). Our children WILL live in a much greener, safer and more efficient world than we have known and grew up in. No time could be better than now to discover all the wonders that soap nuts offer us. Better laundry products are only the beginning.

How to Conserve Energy When Using Your Washing Machine

Washing machine has been a huge help to us ever since they have been introduced in the market. Rather than spending hours doing our laundry, we now have more time on our hands to do other productive things. But in the past few years, these appliances are also one of the biggest consumers of energy and water. Even as you read this, these washers are slowly leaving a bad imprint on the surface of the earth, slowly exhausting our natural resources.

I am sure you also feel bad about trading our natural resources with our convenience. But there are actually a lot of ways on how to cut back on energy and water costs when using washing machines. Here are some of them;

1. Plan your laundry
Restrict your laundry days to two days a week only if you have a big family. It is better to use the washer in full laundry loads rather than use your laundry machine even when you only have a few clothes to wash. This way, you can maximize the use of the detergent, water and energy.

2. Pre-treat stained clothes
Not all of the clothes we wash are stained. If there are stained clothes, use a stain remover first or soak your stained garments in laundry detergent overnight to loosen up the dirt. Add these pre-treated clothes with the rest of your laundry and use cold water temperature when cleaning them. Many people use hot water cycle to get rid of the stains. The heating element in laundry appliances gobbles up a lot of energy. You will also do your clothes a huge favour. Hot water temperature shortens their life and fades off their color easily.

3. Unplug the washer when you are going on a vacation
Even if a machine is not turned on, it is still sucking energy through its plug. If you are going away on a vacation, you should unplug your washer. This will let your washer go on a hiatus as well.

4. Regularly clean and maintain your washer
If your washer is faulty to begin with, you are more likely to start and re-start your washer and waste gallons of water when it malfunctions. A faulty machine is a wasteful machine. So make sure your laundry appliance is working seamlessly.

These are just some of the ways for you to conserve energy when using your washing machine. It does not hurt to follow them avidly.

Controlling Pollen Allergy Symptoms at Home

Preventing your pollen allergy symptoms from being triggered as often in your home is possible with the help of several allergy control products. As with the other types of allergies, there are two parts to controlling your pollen allergies: cleaning and prevention.

Before you can prevent your pollen allergy symptoms from acting up in the future, you need to clean the existing pollen out of your home. All the prevention strategies in the world won't help if the pollen grains are already inside. To get started, follow the cleaning guidelines below.

Cleaning

Since pollen is one of the components of household dust, the first thing you should do is thoroughly dust your home. DO NOT dry dust your home...aka dust with just a dry cloth. All this does is relocate allergens rather than remove them. Use a dusting solution, electrostatic cloths, or a HEPA vacuum to dust instead.

Always wear a pollen mask...also called an allergy mask or dust mask...when doing any allergy cleaning. You will kick up a lot of allergens when you clean. Of course, it's always best if the allergy sufferer doesn't do the cleaning.

Once your dusting has been completed, wash any curtains, drapes, or rugs you may have in your home. It's best to not have these...as cloth products will accumulate allergens...but I know it's tough to part with them. Just make sure they are washed with a natural laundry detergent in 130 degree water on a weekly basis.

Finally, vacuum all carpeting in your home with a HEPA vacuum cleaner only. This type keeps pollen and other allergens from recirculating as you vacuum. Any upholstered furniture that remains in your house should be vacuumed as well. Again, it's best not to have carpet or upholstered furniture in the house if at all possible. However, should you follow these guidelines; you will find your pollen allergy symptoms won't bother you near as much.

Prevention

Once you've done the best job you can cleaning up all the pollen in your home, the next step is preventing it from getting inside again. Keep in mind that using these cleaning and prevention methods isn't a one time deal. It is a constant process if you want to reduce your pollen allergy symptoms.

Use these prevention methods to help keep pollen at bay....

• Keep your windows closed at all times. If it gets too warm, use the air conditioning to keep your home cool. Air conditioning...whether it be window units or central air...help filter out allergens and deep the humidity down.

• If you don't have air conditioning and must keep windows open to stay cool, use a window filter in each window to keep pollen out. Be sure to use allergy filters in your HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system and keep up with replacing them!

• Ensure that all your windows and doors are airtight and not letting any outside air in. You may need to put up or replace some weather stripping....or do some caulking.

• Keep the area(s) around the door(s)to your home clean and free of clutter...aka places where allergens can collect. Also, keep a rubber mat in front of your doors so visitors can wipe their shoes before entering. Once they have entered ask them kindly to remove their shoes...shoes bring pollen and other allergens in the house.

• If possible, stay inside on days with a high pollen count. It may seem obvious but this is the best way to control your pollen allergy symptoms. If you must go out, wear an allergy mask or use allergen screen gel. When you come back in, take a shower and put on clean clothes. Wash the clothes you had on while you were outside with natural laundry detergent.

• When doing laundry, never hang your clothes outside to dry. While drying in the warm sun, you clothes are catching pollen grains that you will bring in with your clothes when they are dry. Until washed again in an allergy natural laundry detergent, those clothes subject you to pollen. You can also spread the pollen throughout your house when you wear those clothes.

• Use a HEPA air purifier in your home...especially in your bedroom. It will really help to filter out the pollen (and other allergens) from the air. This is important as you spend most of your life there.

• If you have a pet, wipe it down once a week with pet wipes. Pollen attaches to their coat while outside...and they bring it back in with them and disperse it around your home. Pet wipes also help control other allergens like dander and dust mites. Wipes will help control these allergens in your pets hair between baths.

Following these cleaning and prevention guidelines will help you find relief this allergy season and all of them to come.

As an allergy sufferer I have been sniffing, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing most of my life. My true relief came from practicing prevention! I hope to pass along my knowledge and experience to as many allergy sufferers as I can. http://www.allergy-control-products.com/about-allergy-products.html

How to Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

In today's economy, many people are looking for ways to trim down their household expenses. Laundry detergent is no exception. For people who do a load or two of laundry a day, laundry detergent expenses can really add up over a short period of time. There are ways to make your own laundry detergent and for a fraction of what you would pay at the store. Here are some of the best recipes for laundry detergent.

Ingredients Needed

1 cup washing soda, such as Arm and Hammer
1 bar of soap, such as Pure and Natural
½ cup of borax, such as 20 Mule Team
About three gallons of water
Containers and Etc Needed
1 five gallon bucket with lid
Large wooden spoon
Large Pot
Box Grater

Directions

Put four cups of water into the pot and heat until boiling. Reduce heat until it is just simmering. While the water is heating, use the box grater to slice the soap up into little curls. This will help the soap dissolve faster than by chopping it up into pieces.

Place the soap into the water, a little bit at a time. Stir the soap and water solution until the soap is completely dissolved. If you have used soap with a coloring added, the water will appear the same color, but a little paler. Once the soap dissolves, you will have a warm pot of soapy water.

Now, get your five gallon bucked and add three gallons of warm water. Slowly add one cup of the Arm and Hammer washing soda. Then carefully pour in the soap water you made on the stove. Add 1/2 cup of borax if you desire. Some people feel that borax is a little too harsh. But it cleans well and it smells fresh. It's completely up to you.

Next put the lid on the container and let it sit for 24 hours. When you return to your soap and remove the lid, there's no telling what consistency you may have. It may be similar to a gooey mess, it may seem like Jell-O, or it may be like regular liquid laundry soap. Sometimes it may even be watery. Whatever the texture, the soap is fine. Use a measuring cup and use a cup of the detergent for each load of laundry. If it is rather globby, you can simply mix it with water once you put it in the washing machine.

This soap works very well at removing stains and getting your clothes clean. The difference in pricing can be phenomenal, especially if you use do a lot of laundry. The cost for making six batches of this laundry soap is under 10 dollars. The cost for doing that much laundry with a brand name laundry detergent is around $75. That is a significant amount of savings and the laundry soap is very easy to make.

There are ways that you can add additional scents to the soap. It's not recommended to use any types of oils, since you don't know how well it would be mixed. However, you can easily alter the scent by using different types of bar soap.

Also, for extra cleaning power, many people use twice as much Arm and Hammer and Borax. However, if you or your family members have sensitive skin, you may need to see how you react to the Borax in the first batch.

The best part about making laundry detergent is the savings you will see in your household cleaning supply bill. It should be enough for you to pick up a new piece of clothing: to wash, of course.

Feng Shui in the Laundry Room

Much like the Feng Shui bathroom, the Feng Shui laundry room is a place that harnesses the Water element. The laundry room is also an area that cleanses and removes dirt. Though it may be easy to overlook, the laundry room is an important area to apply Feng Shui principles to. Every aspect of your home can affect the flow of positive Chi throughout the home and the laundry room is no exception.

There are many different ways to bring Feng Shui harmony to your laundry room. The more steps you do the better the desired affect will be. The first thing you should do is check your hoses and under your washing machine. If either of these things are leaking it is believed you finances will "leak" and leave you. Make any necessary repairs or replacements to the hoses or machine to prevent any leaks. Next, check to see if there is buildup in your washing machine or dryer. Buildup in the washing machine is usually laundry detergent or dust. In the dryer be sure to clear out any lint that accumulates after every few dries. Lent and buildup are both essentially clutter, and Feng Shui is unable to be as effective in the presence of clutter.

Going along with cleanliness in the laundry room, wash the sink and the floors regularly. This will help keep the lint from building up on everything. It is also important to replace light bulbs as soon as they burn out. Always keep the trash emptied and be sure all of the cabinets are neatly organized. Organization in the laundry room is key when applying Feng Shui principles. It is important to have baskets allocated for each color/type of laundry to organize it. After you have washed and dried your laundry, never let it sit in the laundry room. Always fold and hang your laundry immediately after cleaning.

Just like in the Feng Shui bathroom, be sure you keep the door anytime you are not using your Feng Shui laundry room. If you don't have a door, hang a decorative curtain or beads in front of the washer and dryer. Whatever you hang up has to be pleasing to your eyes or it will bring you down in spirit. Also, the lid on the washing machine should always be closed. Since clean water is associated with finances, letting it out by leaving the lid open can let your finances flow away. The door on the dryer should also remain closed at all times.

As always, no matter what Feng Shui elements and principles you use for your laundry room, be sure not to overdo it. Too many elements will cause clutter to develop and hinder the Feng Shui effect. Once you have applied the Feng Shui principles to your laundry room enjoy an organized, clutter-free space.

Moms - You Can Have Clean Baseball Uniforms For Your Child

One of the real nightmares that baseball moms face is when they hear the coach say "We are going to be wearing white uniforms this year." Talk about going into full stress mode. The thought of looking out on the field and seeing their child's white uniform, especially the pants, with those glaring red clay stains standing out like a sore thumb is almost too much for a mom to bear.

As new and advanced fabrics are introduced as the latest uniform standard, the challenge of cleaning the difficult stains and odors associated with athletic competition increases. Well, there are some products and cleaning tips that can truly help clean these tough stains and add life to your child's uniform. Experienced baseball moms and professional equipment managers who clean uniforms for a living, have discovered a few universal "cleaning truths" that can make this process much easier and effective. So what can you do to really make the grass stains, the red clay stains, mud, blood and even field paint go away and keep that uniform looking new all season long?

Don't Delay. Set-in stains are almost impossible to get out. The longer a uniform sits and waits to be cleaned, the tougher the challenge to get out the dirt and stains. Always try to start the cleaning process as soon as possible after the uniform comes off the athlete. A pair of baseball pants thrown in the trunk of the car for several days before cleaning is just asking for trouble. I have talked to dozens of collegiate equipment managers and they all will tell you that the first thing they do when they get back to the equipment room after a game is to put every uniform through the cleaning process. If a uniform is improperly cleaned and stains are not taken out in the initial cleaning, the problem is compounded and the set-in stain might be with the uniform forever.

Presoak: For really tough stains like grass and red clay, it may be necessary to presoak the uniform in water, putting them in a utility sink or tub. By simply rinsing off the uniform to remove as much as the dirt as possible, you make the rest of the cleaning process more likely to do the trick. Plain, warm - not hot - water is usually sufficient but some people like to add a little laundry detergent and/or some baking soda to the water. We recommend soaking the uniform for at least an hour, leaving it in longer is fine and will not hurt the cause.

Use A Pre-Spot Stain Remover: No matter how good your laundry detergent is, you will most likely still need to use a good stain remover to get added "lift" on the tough stains. Whatever your choice, be sure to select a product that is safe to use, won't harm colors and is friendly to the environment. There are chemicals that can clean just about anything but you want to stay away from products that are potentially toxic and can harm the environment, not to mention harming the material to be cleaned. Most stain removers should be applied by spraying directly on the stains (don't be bashful, spray liberally) and letting soak in for at least a few minutes before putting the uniform in the washing machine. Some people choose to rub in the stain remover or lightly scrub the stained area after the stain remover is applied. This is fine but remember to be careful not to be too aggressive so as to damage the fabric.

Washing: After treating the uniform with the stain remover, it is time to put it through the wash cycle in your washing machine. In most cases, using your normal favorite laundry detergent is sufficient for the job. When possible, washing the uniform alone, apart from your other clothes, is the best way to take care of the uniform. Using cool or warm water is always best - Never use hot water!

Heat Is Not Neat: If possible, try to always refrain from drying an athletic uniform in a dryer. High heat can cause many problems like fading colors, shrinking the material and setting in stains. If you can hang the uniform to air dry in an area away from direct sunlight, you will help the uniform to last longer and look better.

There are many factors and variables that can affect the cleaning process. The content of the water (soft or hard, alkalinity, ph, etc.), the make-up of the soil or clay, the type of fabric used in the uniform, the application of the cleaning materials, etc. There is no perfect science to the cleaning process because of the various factors involved, but the tips and product recommendations that we have shared with you are a great start to having the best opportunity to have your child looking their best on the field!

All You Need to Know About Laundry Detergents

Have you ever thought that you know all you can possibly know about the many kinds of laundry detergents that grace our supermarket shelves today? Or do you hunt and peck like a chicken when it comes to finding just the right one to use? Here are a few facts about laundry soaps and detergents that may prove helpful.

Using soap for laundering has been in existence for centuries. The main raw materials are oils/fats which are tallow or coconut and alkali which is either sodium or potassium hydroxide. Despite the improvements that were made over the years in the quality of the soap product and in the manufacturing process, all of the soaps out there have one major flaw. They combine with minerals that seem to make the water hard as bricks so that a soap curd forms. This may leave a sticky white or a yellow residue on the washer and may even stick to the fabrics in the washer. YUK! Can you imagine your clothes coming out of the washer full of sticky, yellow spots? This has led to a limited popularity of soaps. There are just a few brands available. Today, however, there are two main types of soaps for doing laundry:

Light Duty Powders

This is basically pure soap that has perfume and fluorescent whitening agents. These soaps are designed for delicates and lightly soiled fabrics. Because these soaps are very mild, they are usually used for washing diapers and baby clothes.

Soap Bars

Have you been around long enough to hear of laundry soap bars? I thought not! They were the precursors of the powder and chip forms. These bars are usually made from tallow or a combination of coconut oil and tallow. Borax and other builders are added to help soften the water and improve performance.

One good thing about a laundry soap bar - it is excellent for pre-treating heavy stains and soils before washing. Other uses for the laundry soap bar are hand washing hosiery and lingerie.

DETERGENTS

Through the march of time, detergents have replaced soap for laundering mainly due to the fact that they perform over a broad spectrum of water hardness levels. There are many diverse kinds of laundry detergents just as there are so many colors of roses nowadays! They are categorized by their general purpose and they are available either in powder or liquid forms.

General Purpose

Powders

o They are made for all washable fabrics all the way from grimy work clothes to lightly soiled lingerie.

o Some powders may be used for household cleaning and for washing dishes.
Liquids

o These are used for general purpose laundry but work very well on oily soils.

o Because the laundry detergent is in liquid form, it is very easy to pre-treat grease spots and stains before washing. They are very convenient and effective to use.

Combination Laundry Detergents

Laundry detergents were developed that had a bleach alternative which was in the form of color-safe bleach and also fabric softeners. This no longer made it necessary to buy two products. Now one product could do two or three jobs rolled into one! You can now wash your clothes in lower temperatures and still have them come out smelling fresh and looking like new.

This has just been a little about the laundry detergent dilemma you often find yourself in when shopping for that right detergent!
